The Right to Stop
Epistemic Work-in-Progress and Operational Corrigibility in Lean Systems
When Lean keeps the tools but reverses the power.
Toyota’s distinctive contribution was to make authority answerable to evidence. This paper examines how Lean programmes can retain its tools while reversing that relationship. It links unfinished customer work with admitted but unresolved evidence, and argues that pressure for output can erode the capacity to detect and correct problems. The proposed objective is operational corrigibility: the ability to let reality correct the operating model, including management’s own assumptions.

Epistemic Work-in-Progress and Operational Corrigibility in Lean Systems
This paper interprets the Toyota Production System as a correction architecture through which evidence of deviation can interrupt plans, summon response and revise standards. It develops a two-inventory model of unfinished customer work and unresolved evidence, and proposes operational corrigibility as a more exact objective than operational excellence.

Derek J. Smith, PhD
Derek holds a PhD in laser physics from the University of Glasgow and brings more than 25 years of international experience across energy, trading, manufacturing, logistics and asset management. He has held leadership and advisory roles with Shell, BP, Aramco, Amazon, Aegon and Sulzer, working from frontline operations to global improvement programmes.He founded Second Law Studio to pursue questions arising at the intersection of physical reasoning, organisational practice and institutional change.
How we work
Questions determine the form: research papers, shorter notes, conceptual models or collaborative investigations. The work separates observation from explanation and mechanism from metaphor. Claims must identify their evidence, their limits and what would count against them. The studio is independent; its work stands or falls on the quality of its arguments, evidence and published record.
Why Second Law?
The second law of thermodynamics directs attention to what sustains useful capacity: gradients, boundaries, flows, maintenance and irreversible change. The studio does not treat it as an equation governing organisations, or use entropy as a decorative synonym for disorder. It is a reason to look again at what present performance depends on – and what it may be consuming.
Efficiency over time
Efficiency, as used here, is not a momentary ratio of inputs to outputs. It is a property of the system over time: what it can produce, what it must expend or preserve, which consequences escape the measure, and what possibilities remain available afterwards.

Criticism, counter-evidence, relevant cases and questions capable of sustaining further inquiry are welcome.Invitations for research collaboration, talks, private briefings and carefully bounded commissions are also considered. The studio does not provide standard management training, generic operational excellence programmes or packaged transformation methods.
